Sarah Lucas

The artist Sarah Lucas has a retrospective opening at Tate Britain next week. For her fans, of which I am a die hard, we know this show will be both gratifying and mindblowing. I used to see her around in the 90’s. She was wild, and also quite shy. She looked like one of the people Andy Warhol would have been obsessed with, boyish girlish. Everything she wore, mostly jeans and a t-shirt, looked incredibly good. I had the inspiration to ask her to walk in my 1998 fashion show - to my joy she accepted. I noticed she had not come out for the finale and I worried that she might have disapproved of this frivolous fashion ritual. Instead, when I found her afterwards she hadn’t realised there was a finale and got changed and gone to the bar. I love Sarah’s work, it is provocative and brilliant. I have travelled around the world to see it and whenever I do I feel charged up by her anarchic spirit. I am looking forward to revisiting this feeling when her show opens.
